The Antibes is a shoulder bag for the hours you refuse to hurry. A wide, shallow basket in a tight hand weave, carried close under the arm on a braided strap, with a soft drawstring pouch inside that gathers the day shut. Open it and the lining spills over the rim like a pocket square. Pull the cords and everything is kept.

It is wider than you expect and lighter than it looks: 32 centimetres across, 17 high, 10 deep, and about 400 grams. It takes a phone, a paperback, sunglasses, keys and a nectarine, with room left for whatever you buy on the way home.

Wipe with a barely damp cloth and let it dry away from direct sun. Store it stuffed with tissue so the weave keeps its shape. Keep the pouch cords clear of buckles and jewellery that could snag the strands. Not one for heavy rain.

Weaving the Antibes by hand on a wooden form

The making

Woven by hand, one strip over the next.

Each Antibes begins as a bundle of narrow strips, cut from a supple leather look material and worked over and under across a wooden form until the panel is tight enough to hold its shape and soft enough to give. The strap is braided from the same strips. Inside sits a drawstring pouch in soft cloth that lifts out when you want the basket bare. There is no hardware to polish and no logo to look after. The weave is the whole idea.
